Partridge Berry

One of my favorite evergreen groundcovers is Mitchella repens, partridge berry. This tough little plant thrives in moist to dry, acidic shade. It's white, paired, tubular flowers are often overlooked by people, but serve as an important pollinator food source with plants often blooming twice in a year, once in the late spring, and once again in the autumn. It's fruits persist through the winter and are an important food source for many birds and small mammals.
